The Antigua Charter Yacht Show was formed primarily for the benefit of the yachting industry in Antigua. Professional charter brokers from some of the most elite yacht charter houses worldwide, together with some of the biggest names in yachting journalism jet in from cities worldwide in early December from as far afield as New Zealand and the Galapagos Islands, from North America and Europe to participate in the show. the agents and brokers need every minute of every hour of the six day show to view and assess each registered yacht entry in detail. To maintain the highest of professional standards and security during the event and to enable the entrants to best showcase the full scope of their yachts’ assets to the brokers, the show is a private, invitation only event. The festival is held at the Christian Valley Agricultural Station. The main aim of the Mango Festival was to promote the utilization of mangoes and other fruits as well as to support the rejuvenation of the station. Although the station boasts many fruit trees, the jewel in the crown is the collection of 25 elite mango varieties, including Trinidad’s “Julie”, Haiti’s “Madame Francisque”, Cuba’s “Piniero”, Asian “Num Mai Doc” and a score of Florida varieties. The festival offers many activities and workshops, including: Budding and grafting workshop Tours of the nature trails Film: Sweetest Mango Story telling Live entertainment Book sale Sales of fruits and plants Sales of agro-processed products Agro-processors competition Food stalls by local community group Leading up to the main event we held the Magic Mango Menu Culinary competition for professional hotel chefs and bartenders plus an event demonstrating cooking techniques using green mangoes. The Magic Mango Culinary Competition is an exciting event, with representatives from Antigua & Barbuda’s most prestigious resorts.  

Over the last two decades, Antigua Sailing Week has become one of the biggest events in the international sailing calendar, and it is one of the most fantastic times to visit Antigua and take advantage of an island-wide party. From small beginnings, the regatta has developed into a world-class event and now includes an Ocean Series for boats that prefer ocean racing. Antigua Sailing Week began in 1967 with only 10 boats, and at times has had over 200 entries. You don’t have to be a sailor however, to enjoy the festivities of Antigua Sailing Week.  The races are followed by many non-competing yachts that tag along to see the action, and there are fantastic look-out points around the island from which to spectate. The Annual Seafood Festival is a tasty and entertaining tradition, with music, great food, arts and crafts. This is an initiative of the Ministry of Agriculture, Lands, Housing & the Environment geared towards the promotion of sustainable livelihood for fisher-folks, vendors and residents. The Annual Seafood Festival is a new rich tradition in the Antigua started in 2009, as a post Independence event. It’s held at the Urlings Wharf showcasing abundance of seafood dishes such as crabs, conchs, fish and lobsters, there is a dish to suit every seafood taste –lovers from all walks of life, patronize the vendors displaying dishes. In 2009 the organizers upped their game with the improved facilities coupled with additional activities for the entire family to include, the Mango eating competition, fishing competition for children, bounce castle, and boat ride around Carlisle Bay, and restaurant-like seating arrangements. The tradition has built around it a safe, family friendly environment showcasing the great seafood that Antigua has to offer while bringing people from all over in the season. For the history of the festival you have to step back in time to 1st August 1834 when slavery was abolished. People immediately celebrated by taking to the streets to celebrate their freedom and express their joy and happiness. Over the years there was a return to this informal celebration until 1957 when the first official Antiguan Carnival was organised. Since then the festival has developed into 10 days of music, dance and revellery, with street marches, jump-ups and formal evening shows – calypso, pan, and Carnival Queen pageants – always around the last week in July the first week in August. For the visitor to Antigua it is perhaps the best time to visit Antigua to get a real insight into the culture of the country and to understand the sheer joy people still feel at this time of year.
